An abysmal performance delivered by the league leaders in their last outing has been an eyesore. An utterly shambolic defence can turn tables even if one is playing against the last placed side in the league ; the Catalans would concur to it because that’s what the Spanish heavyweights went through yesterday.  Going out after a disappointing draw against Girona to win three points in the next game was what Barcelona had fancied but that failed to materialise.

Barcelona were playing well intially. They dominated possession and attacked to create chances. Phillippe Coutinho scored a fantastic goal from out of the box after Messi dribbled through the opponents to deliver a pass to the Brazilian which he fired into the back of the net and that put Barcelona ahead at the twelfth minute mark. More goals were expected in the first half but Leganes’ deep block didn’t allow Barcelona a way through to the goal.

Jordi Alba and Luis Suarez were rested to make way for Vermaelen and Munir in the starting eleven.  Munir failed to impress as he misplaced many passes and got caught offside a few times which ruined the attack. Thomas Vermaelen could never match the pace and quality of Jordi Alba in the left back position which rendered him a complete misfit for the position. As if these errors were not enough that Gerard Pique had to keep up his poor form which augmented the problems even more.  In the second half Barca conceded two goals in quick succession all due to the defensive errors, the protagonist being Gerard Pique. In the second goal, Pique’s poor clearance let the ball fall literally into the path of Oscar Rodriguez, who made no mistake and fired home.

Leganes were leading 2-1 and Barcelona had around forty minutes to turn the match but they could not react the way it was required. Even though Malcom, Suarez and Alba all were introduced into the game, they could not contribute effectively. In the end Barcelona had to go home dropping three points.

Gerard Pique needs to transform into his earlier self to make the foundation of the team stronger.  Umtiti also has to imrove because after the world cup we have seen the difference in him and it’s a negative one. Interestingly,  this season’s defensive record is in stark contrast to last season’s record.  Barca has conceded 7 goals in 6 matches this season while last season they conceded that in around 18 matches.  This is an alarming statistic and if Barcelona do not improve this, then matching their opponents in the UCL will become a herculean task.
