The two giants of football, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who have taken the level of the game to an entirely different pedestal, have dominated the Ballon D’Or award for the entire past decade. Consistently delivering stupendous performances year after year has led them to the podium every year.
Cristiano Ronaldo, the 5 time winner of the highest rated indivdual award in football, was interviewed by France Football and has named the favourites for the prize according to him. He said Salah, Modric, Griezmann, Varane and Mbappe would make it. When asked how many players would be capable of playing at the highest level for more than ten years, you can count them on one hand, he replied “There are two. Messi and I” . asked who deserves to win the award he replied “I desreve it.”
Ronaldo snubbed Leo Messi because he wasn’t sure if he is a deserving candidate this time. The Argentine who has shared the Golden Ball award podium with him for around 10 years on the trot could not get his hands on the biggest international achievement for his team- The FIFA World Cup, which he might have played for the last time. Other than that he also could not lift the UCL, after getting knocked out in the round of sixteen after the nightmarish match against AS Roma. Although Messi had won the La Liga, topping all the attacking stats, and the Copa Del Rey, it is believed that even a domestic double appears pale in front of the UCL, which is generally seen carrying more weight when considering best player.
Salah had been a beast for Liverpool bagging 44 goals and 15 assists last season and was integral to Liverpool’s journey to the UCL final. Internationally, he led Egypt to the World Cup 2018 `for which he again deserves credit.
Varane and Modric have been clutch for Real Madrid’s winning campaign in the UCL. Varane also forms the part of the World Cup winning French team.
Luka Modric, the winner of the UEFA Player of the Year award, FIFA’s The Best Award and the UCL drags his name to the top among the favourites to win the Ballon D’Or. Despite not having many goals and assists to his name he has had immense influence on the games he played. The Croatian national team’s battle till the final has also seen his leadership profoundly effective.
Griezmann, who helped Atletico Madrid to win the UEFA Europa League and Kylian Mbappe, also form part of the France international team who came out as winners of the World Cup. Mbappe has risen as the prodigy from Monaco and has even outclassed Neymar at times in his stay at PSG.
The winner of the UEFA POTY and the FIFA’s The Best Awards seems to be most likely to win the Golden Ball this year and break the hegemony of the two aliens of the football world, Messi and Ronaldo, over this prize.
